Re: Best device for live recording |
A.
Recording will probably be done through the soundboard
B.
I would like to have a mic input as a backup.
C.
My cost ceiling is about $1000
If these are the only factors involved, then get yourself a DAT deck. 3+ hours recording without changing tapes and it doesn't use ATRAC compression that minidiscs do. I own both formats, DAT is sooo much better.
I would say laptop over DAT, but it's tough to get a laptop prepared for this for under $1000...

Hey, what about the Nomad Jukebox 3?? Haven't heard anyone mention this one, beats the heck out of DAT if you ask me, but that's just me. Much easier transfers, records in 16/44, etc. I'd highly recommend looking into the NJB3. For more info, go here:

Re: Best device for live recording |
It does work great, but it's just really hard to get good levels on it and there are
some complaints about the a/d and preamp on the JB3 which might make users invest a few hundred more in an external unit. I would wait until a better hard drive recorder surfaces.
If his price ceiling is $1000, he'd be much better off with a D8 or M1.
